Changes to Funding
Ouroboros has recently heard that owing to cutbacks at the Arts Council, the company has been moved from the Annual Funding category to that of Project Funding. We will keep supporters informed of any further developments.
Ouroboros in Kuala Lumpur
Cathal Courtney and Geoff Gould have recently returned from Kuala Lumpur where they delivered an Ouroboros workshop on the plays of Brian Friel. The two week long workshop culminated in performaces of extracts from five of Friel's major plays. The show ran for two nights to packed houses.
Ouroboros were invited to Malaysia by Ireland's ambassador there, Eugene Hutchinson. In conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Actors' Centre (KLPAC), Ambassador Hutchinson assembled an impressive group of Malaysian actors interested in deepening their knowledge of Friel's work. The result was an intensive two week programme of talks, readings and rehearsals leading to public performances over two nights.
Speaking to webmaster after his return, Cathal said, "The cast were incredible. They had ten days to acquaint themselves with work they had never encountered before. Then it was lights up in front of an audience, and off-book. Both Geoff and I felt incredibly proud to be watching ten talented performers from a far-off place bringing Friel's work to life before an audience who had never seen any of his work before. Then again, a cast is not going to go too far wrong when Geoff Gould is directing. It was my first time to be in a rehearsal room with him and it is an experience I will never want to forget."
"Huge thanks must to go to Ambassador Hutchinson and his wife, Adele, for looking after us so well and for having the vision to initiate this unique undertaking. Eóin Duggan, First Secretary at the Embassy deserves our special thanks for the assistance he gave us in organising the whole event. Joe Hasham and Faridah Merican who run KLPAC were truly inspirational people who treated us as if we were their own. We miss them terribly and are already looking towards future collaborations, growing the seeds that have been planted."
